Cure for the Pain at the Cedar Lee

Boston-based trio Morphine stood out in the flourishing ’90s indie-rock scene — known for its dense, aggressive, grunge-influenced bands — with its strikingly minimalist, guitar-free sound. The group was formed in 1989 by bassist/vocalist Mark Sandman, who was closed-lipped and often prickly about the details of his difficult life, which included the deaths of his brothers. His own end was dramatic too: He died of a heart attack in Italy in 1999, during a Morphine performance. The 2011 documentary, Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story, tells his story through interviews with family, friends, and bandmates. It gets a one-time screening at the Cedar Lee Theatre tonight at 7:30. Tickets are $10 on the website.
