Formed in Chicago in 2015 by former Smith Westerns guitarist Max Kakacek and Unknown Mortal Orchestra drummer Julien Ehrlich, Whitney quickly gained acclaim with its debut album, 2016's Light Upon the Lake. The current tour supports the forthcoming Small Talk. First single "Dandelions" recalls classic singer-songwriters from the '70s. The group performs at 7 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom. Folk Bitch Trio opens. That group has toured supporting bands as disparate as King Gizzard, Alex G, and Julia Jacklin and just sold out its first headline shows in New York and L.A.
