For the past decade, multi-instrumentalist Mike Dillon has carved out a niche for himself as an avant jazz musician who embraces the same kind of odd time signatures and madcap vocals as like-minded acts such as Primus and Skerik, with whom he’s collaborated over the years. His new record, Band of Outsiders, is as out there as anything. Lead single “Carly Hates the Dubstep” features squealing horns, heavy percussion and guttural vocals as the song’s refrain is repeated over and over like some kind of voodoo chant. It’s good stuff that should translate into a high-energy show. (Niesel)
