The Ecstasy of St. Kara

Continuing its spectacular centennial anniversary year, the Cleveland Museum of Art debuts its next major exhibition, The Ecstasy of St. Kara. Opening today in the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Exhibition Gallery, this special exhibition features new work by internationally renowned artist Kara Walker. Influenced by her time in Rome earlier this year, her new series of large-scale works on paper explores “the power of myths and themes of martyrdom that dominate and complicate the issue of slavery and free will.” This new series also examines Christianity’s complex history both globally and in African American culture. The Ecstasy of St. Kara remains on view through Dec. 31. Free. (Usmani)
