The Cynics/Wolf Boy Slim/His Dirty Feet

Garage revival stalwarts The Cynics may have weathered a decade-long hiatus and almost comically frequent lineup changes, but their tight, poppy approach to otherwise well-tread Nuggets-worshiping territory remains fresher than ever. With just enough psych embellishments to keep things interesting, the majority of their swaggering, fuzzed-out classics—including recent tracks like “I Need More” — are assured, straightforward garage punk, a formula that seems like it should get boring but, thanks to their insidiously hooky songcraft, isn’t saddled with the bloated, self-indulgent redundancy that seems to plague some of their contemporaries. The group’s two perennial musicians, guitarist Gregg Kostelich and singer Michael Kastelic, are as snotty and vibrant as ever on live renditions of old favorites like “Baby What’s Wrong” and “Girl, You’re on My Mind,” which they’ll likely perform tonight.
