The Coup/Japanther

Rapper KRS-One coined the term “edutainment” to describe music that both entertained and educated, and that description applies to the Coup. The longstanding hip-hop act formed in Oakland in 1990, at a time when hip-hop was highly politicized. While today’s hip-hop is more about bling-bling and booty, these guys have stuck to their guns. On the catchy new single “Magic Clap,” band leader Boots Riley offer a scathing critique of consumer culture while offering up a chorus to which you can sing along. It’s just one of many great songs on the band’s new album, Sorry to Bother You. (Jeff Niesel)
