The Baptist Generals/The Moxies/Flowers in Flames

This year’s Jackleg Devotional to the Heart is a hot psychedelic mess fused with robotic desires. And that’s meant in the best of ways. Below the churning and chugging of the band’s frenetic musicianship, there’s abundant charm and talent. Tune into “Machine En Prolepsis” for a more aural explanation. From there, dig deep into the rest of the album and you’ll surely come to the conclusion that tonight’s gig is going to be awesome. Perhaps more straightforward, “Oblivion” showcases the band members’ collective penchant for really tight songwriting (it’s also likely to get stuck in your head - again, in the best of ways). The Texas-based, Subpop-signed band has carved out a unique niche over the past decade, and this most recent release sums up their attitude quite nicely. Consider this the biggest and best surprise of your week: the coolest band you’re not yet listening to. (Eric Sandy)
