Soul Low/Sweepyheads/Pack Wolf

“Jank pop” is the tagline that comes with Milwaukee-based Soul Low tonight, and we’re as enticed as you are. So what that mean, exactly? On the band’s latest album, Nosebleeds, the musicians blend tight, poppy songwriting chops with a slightly more open-ended jam mindset. There’s a bit of straightforward garage rock in there, with a touch of avant-garde, almost Wilco-sourced instrumentation. Take “Tied in Knots,” for instance; this tune plays loose with the confines of pop structures and delivers an off-kilter summertime throwback to being young and confused. This is good mid-August music for the car or for the patio or, hell, for the stage. (Eric Sandy)
