Song and Dance

Song of the Jasmine, a dance piece composed by Ragamala Dance Company’s directors Aparna Ramaswamy and Ranee Ramaswamy, features a collaboration with jazz saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa on “an exploration that conjures the past in order to experience the power of the present.” The New York Times has hailed Mahanthappa for his “roving intellect and a bladelike articulation” He leads a new ensemble that features guitarist Rez Abbasi, flautist V. K. Raman, mridangam player Rajna Swaminathan and violinist Anjna Swaminathan for “a live soundscape of jazz and Carnatic music.” The performance takes place at 7:30 tonight at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium.
