When photographer Scott Indermaur launched his
Revealed project six years ago, the Lakewood native never thought that his photographic exploration of our inner lives would turn into a cottage industry. “As an artist, I was just looking for something that would affect people. And then it hit me: Let’s put spirituality in a box!” The initial outcome was a striking portrait series: 31 subjects who had been asked to fill a small wooden box with items that represented their spiritual identity. (That’s Derek I., one of Indermaur’s earliest subjects, above.) To accompany their photos, subjects also completed sometimes funny, sometimes-touching essays expanding on their choices. Today,
Revealed has grown to include a book, a museum exhibition, an art class for youngsters, a collaboration with a Rhode Island N.P.R. affiliate, and a 42-minute documentary that’s currently winning awards on the film-fest circuit. “The project has taken over my life,” Indermaur admits. “But it’s a labor of love. I’m a better person because of it.” The photographer, who has long since relocated to Rhode Island, will be screening the documentary and discussing his project at 7 p.m. tonight at Westlake’s Unity Spiritual Center. Tickets are $10 on the website, or $15 at the door, although no one will be turned away for an inability to pay. Copies of the book and film will also be available for purchase. “We always have great discussions,” says Indermaur. “You can’t look at the pictures without thinking about your own inner life.” Learn more at
