For 30 strong years, New Orleans’ renowned Frazier brothers have led Rebirth Brass Band along the fine line between traditional Second Line musicianship and more modern motifs. NOLA is a world away in terms of culture and geography, but that city’s musical lineage always brings major excitement to the shores of Lake Erie. Rebirth, in particular, highlights the pure soul within the city’s music. It’s difficult to parse out the vibe of Rebirth without resorting to simplistic ideas like “it’s a fucking PARTY, man,” but 2008’s Live at the Maple Leaf gives even the casual listener a technicolor glimpse into the band’s on-stage persona. Clocking in at 24 minutes “The Main Event,” for instance, shows just how far the band is willing to stretch a melody or, to be precise, a suite. Grab your dancing shoes, your ass-shaking jorts — whatever you need — and get down to the Beachland tonight. Because, yes, it’s a fucking PARTY, man. (Eric Sandy)
