Passafire/Stick Figure/Tatanka/Big B

As the summer months waned into an understated autumn in 2007, a little album titled Submersible dropped onto streets around the country and defined an era. For some, it might not have been that grandiose, but Passafire’s sophomore album remains a hallmark of groovy melodies, heady bass lines and chilled-out lyrical narratives. The crunchy guitar riff in the chorus of “Divide” is enough to revive long-lost memories of a moment encased in time. Better yet, though, is the fact that Passafire didn’t let up. Two albums came after Submersible and both are fantastic trips back to the beach. The party continues in tracks like 2009’s “Lay Awake” and 2012’s “Start From Scratch.” The latter really does show off a band that restarted its approach to the craft. Still pretty great, though. Tatanka and Big B kickstart the show, which also includes Stick Figure. (Eric Sandy)
