THE NEWARK EARTHWORKS - A First Century Pilgrimage Center
The Newark Earthworks is the largest connected series of monumental geometric earthworks in the world. The site is one of the most important ceremonial centers of the Hopewell culture (circa AD 1-400). Dr. Lepper will discuss how he thinks the earthworks were used as pilgrimage centers, drawing thousands of people to participate in rituals that linked the Hopewell to the cosmos.
