New York Gypsy All-Stars at Cleveland Museum of Art

This is what you get when you bring together five virtuoso musicians of Greek, Turkish, Macedonian, and U.S. descent, who grew up playing roots music in wedding halls and street corners: the infectiously delightful New York Gypsy All-Stars. Kicking out a fun and funky amalgam of jazz, rock, techno, and Gypsy rhythms, the quintet plays under the leadership of classically trained clarinetist Ismail Lumanovski. “We use lots of musical elements in our original compositions,” he says. “But more important is how we use the ‘Gypsy’ term in a broader sense. We are taking what the Gypsies did, traveling from India to the Balkans and on to Western Europe, and putting together the best musical ideas from every nation along the way. We’re open to the world, and we just take everything we like and make it one.” The group’s tour in support of their Romantech album stops at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gardner Auditorium this evening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 by phone or online. Bring your dancing shoes.
