My Gold Mask is expanding its sound in 2014. The established duo of singer/drummer Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armondo added drummer James Andrew to flesh out their sound. The Chicago-based trio modifies the reverberating smoky mood of Leave Me Tonight into industrial-pop dance tunes, retaining a gothic aesthetic. They’ve ramped up the energy in the series of singles they’ve dropped over the past year too. Rochelle’s vocals echo through electronic effects over the driving beat of “Battles,” painting a dark picture with warped synths and hard-hitting drums.
