Kelly Hogan/Maura Rogers & the Bellows

A consummate collaborator, singer-songwriter Kelly Hogan has worked with a number of great artists over the course of a career that dates back to the early ’90s. She’s been a member of the garage rock outfit the Rock*A*Teens, recorded with Southern indie rock weirdo Vic Chesnutt and employed Jon Langford’s terrific backing band the Pine Valley Cosmonauts to play on her 2000 solo album Beneath the Country Dog. Oh, yeah, she also did time in Neko Case’s backing band, singing backing vocals for the alt-country diva. Her new album, I Like to Keep Myself in Pain, is a collection of beautiful, understated pop tunes that have a bit of a rootsy, alt-country vibe. “We Can’t Have Nice Things” is every bit as nuanced as something by Aimee Mann, and the title track is a rather wry contemplation on a relationship gone bad.
