Walt Whitman at the time he met Wilde and Stoker
When: Sat., June 3, 7-8:30 p.m. 2023
When Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" reached British shores, it had a profound effect on Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker. Both found themselves in America on separate occasions, and the young writers, each who had previously corresponded with Whitman, were favored with an audience. Many subjects were discussed between them; their literary contemporaries, art, aesthetics, self-promotion, masculinity, and the celebration of the senses in word and in practice. Using material from contemporary records, personal letters and newspaper articles, WordStage recreates the substance of these marvelous meetings between three men of letters at different stages in their lives and careers.
