Ulysses, by James Joyce, is widely considered — by James Joyce scholars and a
certain contingent of snooty hipsters — to be the greatest work of fiction
ever. Most Ph.D’s will at least concede that it’s probably the greatest
work of modernist fiction, and it’s certainly one of the most complex and inaccessible works of the 20th century. Hard as it is to believe, it was more of a bitch to write than it is to read, and the documentary In Bed with Ulysses recognizes the arduous process of its creation. It chronicles, ultimately, the toll Ulysses took on James Joyce’s family. (Sam Allard)
