FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE

For a genre essentially defined by its blatant accessibility, power pop has inexplicably become the land of the cult band, that one-hit-wonder or obscure touring act that’s always as brilliant as they are out of step with the times. For the past 16 years, Fountains of Wayne have been the riffy, hummable, and harmony-filled alternative to the DJ takeover of pop music. Songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood haven’t updated their playbook too much across five albums: Last year’s Sky Full of Holes features the same balance of up-tempo nuggets and earnest acoustic ballads as 1996’s self-titled debut. But when you’ve mastered the art of melody to the degree these guys have, why screw around with what works? Dive into the band's catalog and you’ll find a couple dozen earworms left mistakenly unwrapped by the general public. It ain’t complicated. It ain’t revolutionary. But if you’re a music fan who likes a catchy, three-minute guitar-pop ditty, good luck finding anyone doing it better. With Nicole Atkins. 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $20. – Andrew Clayman
