Ex-Astronaut/Sam Goodwill/The Safeties

Formerly known as Field Trip, Ex-Astronaut kicks shoegaze aesthetics across laid-back and anthemic vocals. The band recently released a live session recorded at WRUW. Both “Falling Apart” and “The River” showcase a band knee-deep in interesting ideas and tight execution. The former refracts hypnotic melodies through flange effects, creating a metallic-sounding atmosphere that calls to mind the recording’s cover art. “The River,” meanwhile, builds more slowly toward a thrilling, chugging chorus. We’re betting that this radio station session translates even better to the stage setting. (Eric Sandy)
