Cabinet/Blue Moon Soup

These guys have been touring like crazy lately. This is, what, their third time in Cleveland this year? The numbers bear out the truth: The music here is well worth your attention and energy. Cabinet distinguishes itself from others in the arena by treating its music not strictly as bluegrass, but as a medley of many musical traditions. Head directly to This is Cabinet, Set I and Set II, which are both fantastic live albums that show off the band’s best stuff. “Mr. Spaceman,” from the second set, starts as a jaunty two-four alt-country tune, but soon descends into a bit of polyrhythmic madness. Drummer Jami Novak sends the band into outer space after the strings team (JP Biondo on mandolin, Mickey Coviello on guitar, Pappy Biondo on banjo, Dylan Skursky on bass and Todd Kopec on fiddle) just destroys whatever foundation they had built up in the first two minutes of the song.
