Ava Mendoza's Unnatural Ways

Equal parts noise rock, metal, and free jazz, Ava Mendoza's Unnatural Ways formed in 2012. In addition to Mendoza, it features composer and bassist Tim Dahl, as well as drummer and composer Sam Ospovat. All three members share roots in the music of the later, great Albert Ayler: Mendoza has performed alongside Matana Roberts and Fred Frith, Dahl with Yuseef Lateef and Archie Shepp, and Ospovat with Cecil Taylor and Wadada Leo Smith. New Ghosts, the local group that presents concerts in the tradition of Ayler, has booked this show. Should be a good one. (Niesel)
