Art Exhibit: Window to Sculpture

The annual emerging artists series at the Sculpture Center gives a platform to both social criticism and open-ended psychological riffing. In In-Between, Cozette Phillips, resident artist at Midwestern State University in Texas, defines our engagement with the world via a single object: the window shade. Her material of choice ­— steel — underlines the way our industrial society closes itself off from the natural world: metaphorically in thoughtless consumption, and literally with sun-blotting artifice. Clevelander Elizabeth Emery’s exhibit, Promise, It’ll Only Take a Minute to Stop, is more personal and psychological in its scope. Emery frames her assemblages — which may include stoneware, glazed porcelain, plaster, paint, fabric, and altered found objects — as talking points on how personal narratives and unconscious factors influence our engagement with art. .
