Aqueous/Funktapuss

Our jam band brethren from just up the lake in Buffalo, N.Y., Aqueous are making a serious dent in the region’s music scene. They dropped the tight-knit funk throwdown Willy is 40 last year, expanding their sound in all directions. The band’s excitable modus operandi is wrapped up in the shifting sands of improvisation. “Origami,” the 10-minute opener to last year’s album, showcases all of the different points on the map of musicology these guys are apt to hit during any given jam. They’ve lit up the ballroom’s stage before and they’re guaranteed to do it again. Surprises lurk around every corner, so grab a beverage and dip into the crowd for a night of kaleidoscopic music. And hitting the stage with one of the greatest band names ever, Funktapuss (!) will open the show tonight. (Eric Sandy)
