The Young Americans

Coffeeshops have become modern meccas for listless conversations. The standard "women, Bukowski and music" topics get indulged for the nth time over endless cups of caffeine, fueling the conversation. In Annie Baker's Obie-winning play The Aliens, two loitering thirtysomethings impart their knowledge on these subjects upon a high-school-aged barista. Whether or not their "knowledge" is the "truth" is open to interpretation. In studying the position of the meandering young American, the play compassionately delivers these all-too-relatable observations in an engaging, unique perspective. Directed by Dobama Theatre artistic director Nathan Motta, the three-person play uses a delicately observational script that's been met with critical and audience acclaim alike. Tonight and tomorrow's performances are at 8 at Dobama Theatre. Tickets are $26 with student and senior discounts available. The play runs through Feb. 23. (Stoops)
