Melvins 30th Anniversary Tour/Honky

Since forming in 1983, Melvins has made a name for itself in the world of hardcore music as it’s advanced its career and churned out a lot of slow, sludgy metal albums. As intense as the band’s sound is, it may receive enough credit when it comes to the members senses of humor — a quick look at almost all of the album covers the band has come up with to represent their music is an obvious clue. Their late ’90s trio of albums, which include The Maggot, The Bootlicker, and The Crybaby, are all adorned with pictures of flowers. The band’s latest album, Everyone Loves Sausages, doesn’t stray from the template — neither does it disappoint musically. The album opens with guttural bellows over a very evil sounding riff, yet the album art features a cartoon dog with a string of sausages in its mouth. The contradiction has worked for 30 years, why change anything? (Jacob DeSmit)
