Equal parts Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk, Into the Woods is a fractured fairytale by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Stephen Sondheim and Tony Award-winning director James Lapine. The plot centers on a baker and his wife who yearn for a child, the witch who has placed a curse on them, and other storybook characters drawn from the works of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault. Wishes do come true, we are reminded — but not without consequences. The musical was a hit on Broadway when it premiered in 1987. (A film version came out in 2014.) The CSU Department of Theatre and Dance version opens tonight at 7:30 at the Allen Theatre, where it runs through Nov. 3. Tickets are $15 and $25. (Niesel)
