Free Jazz

As any good musician will tell you, improv can be a tough thing. Soloing is hard enough, but trying to improvise with a bunch of other musicians also trying to improvise? That takes a deep understanding of both the music at hand and the tendencies of the other musicians involved. The Freedom Jazz Collective attempts the feat each time they get together. The mass improv troupe splits into three separate groups (based on their instruments) when they practice, but the excitement comes on the night of each concert when all of the members get together with zero knowledge of what those in other groups have been working on. It makes for a fresh show with each performance for just about everyone involved. (Jacob DeSmit)
