Last year, Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, Esperanza Spalding, became the first jazz artist to win that category in the Grammy’s 53-year history. A child prodigy, Spalding, had already taught herself the violin by age five and was playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon.
