Dumb and Dumber

Cleveland Cinemas’ Late Shift series comes to the Capitol tonight at midnight with the 1979 Steve Martin comedy The Jerk. Martin plays Navin R. Johnson, the adopted son of a black sharecropper. He’s an utter imbecile who struggles to make his way in 1970s America with new jobs new adult experiences. You’ve probably seen snippets of this one on AMC — before AMC was really trendy — but it’s basically a bunch of Steve Martin gags and antics from his 1970s stand-up routines that he converted into a screenplay when he realized he’d better make a movie or else fade into comedy obscurity.
