Cuyahoga Valley will be celebrating Nurses and Doctors from the Civil War Era and will feature Clara Barton with a special exhibit. Clara was a pioneering nurse who founded the American Red Cross. We found that Clara Barton had multiple ties to the people who lived in the valley; some of which come from communities near where Clara grew up and lived.
Clara started out as a nurse during the American Civil War working in hospitals and even sometimes the battlefields. At a time when few women worked outside the home Clara was famous for her humanitarian work.
