Beethoven’s Eroica

Beethoven originally gave the name "Bonaparte" to the piece that became known as Eroica out of admiration for the French hero. But when Napoleon declared himself emperor, Beethoven angrily re-titled it Eroica, which means "Heroic." Tonight at 7:30 at Severance Hall, Jakub Hruša conducts the Cleveland Orchestra as it performs the piece. Performances continue through Sunday. Guest speaker Timothy Cutler of the Cleveland Institute of Music leads the pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. Consult the orchestra website for ticket prices and more details. (Niesel)
