He had some hits (“Everybody’s Talkin’” and “Without You” are the two biggest) and paled around with John Lennon during the ex-Beatle’s separation from Yoko. But most music fans didn’t care to dig deeper. Their loss. Nilsson Schmilsson (from 1971) is a flawless record, fueled by pop smarts and sharp hooks. Nilsson was also a notorious boozer, which contributed to his death in 1994, when he was only 52.
