Tron Legacy: An IMAX 3D Experience

Like last-year’s CGI 3D holiday spectacle Avatar, you need to see TRON: Legacy on the big screen. Unlike Avatar, you don’t need to see it. A sequel to 1982’s at-the-time state-of-the-art geekfest about a guy trapped in a computer, TRON: Legacy picks up 28 years later. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original) has been missing for 20 years, presumably lost somewhere in the grid — the computer world he created years ago. His 27-year-old son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) goes in after him. There’s a story here about Kevin’s evil computer-generated twin wanting to take over the real world, but the movie is really about all the awesome stuff that happens in the grid. It’s a spectacular looking world, where digital lines, discs, and vehicles literally soar out of the screen (seriously — see it in 3D if you’re going to see it). But it doesn’t amount to much — there’s no eco message at the movie’s core. The story is a mere blur trapped in a noisy mess of cool techy toys.
